Muslims and plan of salvation
The Catholic Church declaration on relation with other religion that is often attacked by Protestants and “Bible only” Christians is:
“The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.”
Catechism of the Catholic Church # 841
Some interpret this statement to mean that Muslims, by remaining Muslims, are saved. Yet the statement says: “plan of salvation”, not “salvation”. Does God include Muslims in His plan of salvation? Scripture says:
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
1 Corinthians 15:22
For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men.
The word “all” here means all mankind, i.e. it includes all Muslims. Scripture also says that Christ came to seek and to save the lost (Matthew 18:11, Luke 19:10) and sinners (1 Timothy 1:15). The lost and sinners obviously include Muslims. Thus based on Scripture God does intend to offer salvation to all men. Those who end up in hell do so because they, in using their freedom, reject His Grace.
Others might say that in this declaration the Catholic Church openly admits she and Muslims worship the same one God. But this is a serious lack of knowledge of Catholics and Muslims’ understanding of God. God in Islam, whom Muslims refer (in Arabic) as “Allah”, is not Trinitarian, who is the God of all Christians, Catholics and non-Catholics
